How is GRIT created?
GRIT: easy as 3, 2, 1
GRIT countdown inside joke.
What is no joke however is the care and precision that goes in to creating each GRIT release. Part art, part science the mix of producing a motivating yet effective workout is a fine balancing act and passes through many hands, hearts and minds to deliver the final package we see each quarter. The product is refined through a process of three main areas:
Bryce Hastings – Les Mills International (LMI) Head of Research
Every exercise is tested by our experts. Then it goes to be trialed and tested some more. Science breaks down the workout and re-assembles it for optimum results
GRIT is designed to push the heart rate past the 85% mark as often as we can in 30-minutes followed by complete recovery. So we design these workouts to have very high spikes followed by periods of complete recovery. And it’s those spikes that have those bio-chemical changes that are very specific to a HIIT workout you don’t get with other types of training.
Once we think we’ve got it right, we send it to Penn State (University) and then again, they see if we deliver the HIIT promise.
Erin Maw – LMI Producer and Master Trainer
Music is the motivator and connector. Every beat is uniquely shaped to fit the workout, setting the pace and driving the energy. We need those cool sounds and upbeat feel that will get you moving, and I only pick the best sounds with diversity.
Science & Art
Corey Baird – LMI Technical Consultant & Master Trainer
The process of coming up with a GRIT workout is about first coming up with the structure so I just jot down ideas as I see things in the gym or talk to other trainers and from that I’ll plan the structure.
There is a massive connection between the science and creativity. The team then decides where it best fits together to get that balance.
Les Mills GRIT is a series of 3-programs, GRIT Strength, GRIT Cardio and GRIT Plyo, each program is 30-minutes of High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) and all are tried, tested and tried again.
